Film Review Mum and Dad

Mum And Dad

Director: Steven Sheil (2008)

Meanwhile, at the crappy supermarket where I work! I sometimes find myself criticised for not watching enough mainstream films. This criticism is fair, example; I chose to go and see Tree Of life over the new Planet Of the Apes film and am forever only just discovering one action film or another thanks to ITV 3 and Channel 5. There’s no real reason for this, I like my cheese, my over the top, my exploitation and my blockbuster. I could argue I prefer them when they’re done with effort and an eye for plot, but even that falls down when I look at my collection and See Street Fighter starring Jean-Claude Van Damme. The only thing I can say is, thanks to my viewing choices I now get to write a review about a British Horror film that features a scene in which a man masturbates into a piece of raw meat. So that’s good.

That scene aside Mum and dad is a subtle, tasteful, psychological thriller in the mould of an early Hitchcock or Polanski, calling upon the audience to create their own shocks………………… is not a sentence I can write with a straight face.. This is torture porn, unashamed gross, bloody, violent, torture porn. Olga Fedori, plays the abused victim Lena, a cleaner at Heathrow Airport who gets invited home by a co-worker and ends up forced into the role of family daughter………sadistically abused slave daughter to the Mum (Dido Miles) and Dad (Perry Benson) of the title. They have two other ‘children’ in the house, both have been tortured and both are just as sadistic as their parents. What follows is a cat and mouse game where Lena is forced to do chores, tries to escape, fails, is brutalised, repeats.

If you like this type of film (And I do) then it’s a decent watch. Over the top and incredibly exploitative yes, but with some pretty fun characters and a decent story. The family dynamic between Mum, Dad and the kids is rife with dark humour and there’s a Christmas theme towards the end that borders on genius. The acting’s pretty good and everyone seems to be taking their role seriously. It’s also as bloody as anything in recent memory, and best of all, it does so without genital mutilation. So that’s good. A masterpiece it aint but a crap film it aint either, if you’ve got the stomach, or want to freak out someone who hasn’t, give it a go.

It’s not that much of a spoiler, let’s face it all torture porn films are pretty predictable, but at the end of Mum and Dad there’s a chase scene, and this chase scene just may be the stupidest, slowest chase scene in world history. A hopping Lena keeps tripping over, well thin air to get away from Mom and Dad despite the fact they’re also stumbling around and moving at a snails pace, somehow even though their wounded they catch up with Lena, despite her having had a three minute head start! There’s something tongue firmly in cheek about the whole sequence and thank none existent Christ there is, no good torture porn film ever took itself too seriously.
